Hong Kong has seven natural long weekends in 2027 for people who normally work Monday to Friday. Two are four-day blocks—Lunar New Year and Easter—and October delivers consecutive Friday holidays.
This article treats a long weekend as at least three consecutive days containing a Saturday, Sunday, and one or more weekday General Holidays. It is a planning convention, not a statutory entitlement: individual rosters and employment arrangements can produce different days off.
For the authoritative holiday list and substitution rules, see Hong Kong General Holidays 2027.
Every natural long weekend in 2027
1. New Year: 1–3 January (3 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan | Fri | General Holiday |
| 2–3 Jan | Sat–Sun | Weekend |
No leave is needed. Taking Monday 4 January creates a four-day break.
2. Lunar New Year: 6–9 February (4 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Feb | Sat | Lunar New Year's Day |
| 7 Feb | Sun | Second day of Lunar New Year / Sunday |
| 8 Feb | Mon | Third day of Lunar New Year |
| 9 Feb | Tue | Fourth day, substituted for second day |
The second day falls on Sunday, so the fourth day is gazetted as the substitute on Tuesday. Taking Wednesday 10 to Friday 12 February produces a nine-day break from Saturday 6 through Sunday 14 February.
3. Easter: 26–29 March (4 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 26 Mar | Fri | Good Friday |
| 27 Mar | Sat | Day following Good Friday |
| 28 Mar | Sun | Easter Sunday / Sunday |
| 29 Mar | Mon | Easter Monday |
No leave is needed for the four-day block. Taking Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April connects Easter to the weekend and gives ten consecutive days off through Sunday 4 April.
4. Ching Ming: 3–5 April (3 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 3–4 Apr | Sat–Sun | Weekend |
| 5 Apr | Mon | Ching Ming Festival |
This follows one week after Easter. Taking the four working days from Tuesday 30 March through Friday 2 April connects both holiday blocks into an 11-day break from 26 March through 5 April, using four leave days.
5. National Day: 1–3 October (3 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct | Fri | National Day |
| 2–3 Oct | Sat–Sun | Weekend |
No leave is needed. The more valuable strategy is to combine this block with the following Friday holiday.
6. Chung Yeung Festival: 8–10 October (3 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 8 Oct | Fri | Chung Yeung Festival |
| 9–10 Oct | Sat–Sun | Weekend |
Take Monday 4 through Thursday 7 October to connect National Day and Chung Yeung. Four leave days create a ten-day break from Friday 1 through Sunday 10 October.
7. Christmas: 25–27 December (3 days)
| Date | Day | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Dec | Sat | Christmas Day |
| 26 Dec | Sun | Sunday |
| 27 Dec | Mon | First weekday after Christmas Day |
For Monday-to-Friday workers, the weekday benefit is Monday 27 December. Taking Tuesday 28 through Friday 31 December produces a nine-day break through Sunday 2 January 2028, subject to the 2028 New Year calendar and the worker's actual schedule.
Best bridge-day opportunities
| Strategy | Leave used | Continuous break |
|---|---|---|
| Extend Lunar New Year: take 10–12 Feb | 3 days | 6–14 Feb: 9 days |
| Connect Easter and Ching Ming: take 30 Mar–2 Apr | 4 days | 26 Mar–5 Apr: 11 days |
| Birthday of the Buddha: take Fri 14 May | 1 day | 13–16 May: 4 days |
| HKSAR Day: take Fri 2 Jul | 1 day | 1–4 Jul: 4 days |
| Mid-Autumn: take Fri 17 Sep | 1 day | 16–19 Sep: 4 days |
| Connect October holidays: take 4–7 Oct | 4 days | 1–10 Oct: 10 days |
| Extend Christmas: take 28–31 Dec | 4 days | 25 Dec–2 Jan: 9 days |
The Easter-to-Ching-Ming row produces 11 days, not 10: Friday 26 March through Monday 5 April inclusive.
Holidays that fall on Saturday
Three named General Holidays fall on Saturday in 2027:
- Lunar New Year's Day, 6 February
- Labour Day, 1 May
- Christmas Day, 25 December
Do not assume a universal Monday substitute. Hong Kong does not mondayise every Saturday General Holiday. Lunar New Year produces a Tuesday substitute because its second day falls on Sunday, while the Christmas calendar separately names Monday 27 December as the first weekday after Christmas Day.
For employees, rest-day and Statutory Holiday entitlements require a separate analysis under the Employment Ordinance. This article describes the General Holiday calendar for a typical Monday-to-Friday planning schedule.
Deadline impact: the weeks with fewer working days
| Period | Standard Mon–Fri working days available | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 8–12 Feb | 3 | Lunar New Year holidays Monday and Tuesday |
| 22–29 Mar | 4 across 8 calendar days | Good Friday and Easter Monday surround a weekend |
| 5–9 Apr | 4 | Ching Ming on Monday |
| 27 Sep–1 Oct | 4 | National Day on Friday |
| 4–8 Oct | 4 | Chung Yeung on Friday |
| 27–31 Dec | 4 | First weekday after Christmas on Monday |
A period expressed in calendar days continues through these blocks unless its governing rule says otherwise. A working-day period may exclude General Holidays, but it may use a different definition or treat Saturdays separately. Confirm the rule before counting.
Worked deadline example across the October holidays
Assume a contract requires an action within 10 working days after Thursday 30 September 2027, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and General Holidays. The trigger day is excluded.
- Friday 1 October is National Day and does not count.
- Monday 4 through Thursday 7 October are days 1–4.
- Friday 8 October is Chung Yeung Festival and does not count.
- Monday 11 through Friday 15 October are days 5–9.
- Monday 18 October is day 10.
The deadline is Monday 18 October 2027, 18 calendar days after the trigger date. This is an example based on the stated assumptions, not a universal rule for every contract or statute.
Use the calculator without hiding assumptions
Before calculating, identify:
- the legally correct trigger date;
- whether the trigger day counts;
- whether the period uses working or calendar days;
- whether General Holidays or Statutory Holidays are excluded;
- whether another exclusion—such as severe weather or a contractual shutdown—applies.
The calculator can apply the selected building blocks. It should not be treated as deciding which rule governs a legal or employment situation.
Quick answers
How many natural long weekends does Hong Kong have in 2027?
There are seven for a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule.
What is the longest break without annual leave?
Lunar New Year and Easter each create a natural four-day block.
Which leave strategy gives the best return?
One leave day after the Thursday holidays on 13 May, 1 July, or 16 September creates a four-day break. Four leave days can connect either Easter to Ching Ming for 11 days or the two October holidays for 10 days.
